Barre's Finance Committee reviewed budget requests that could raise the fire budget 31 percent and health permit fees for the first time since 2019. The fire chief asked for $78,000 to restore a day-shift inspector position, saying the department missed 34 second-ambulance calls worth an estimated $55,160 in lost billing when the role sat vacant and logged 187 ambulance calls this year it could not staff itself, relying on mutual aid. A Board of Health representative said the annual food permit would rise 33 percent, from $150 to $200, to fund a cost-of-living raise for the agent known as Andrea, with a formal vote expected February 11.
Cemetery representative Joel Cranston asked to hold his department's budget at $16,884, warning, "If you want better cemetery, we need more than 16." No formal votes were taken.
