Finance Committee · Meeting of April 7, 2026
Barre's Finance Committee pressed the town administrator for backup on a sewer and water services fee that jumped from $7,500 to $51,000 over several years. Town Administrator Melanie told the panel that correcting prior overcharges for retirement and health benefits saved the sewer and water enterprise funds a combined $82,000, even while absorbing the higher fee, but a Sewer Commission representative said members had "never gotten an explanation" for the increases. The committee is bracing for a fiscal 2027 budget shortfall of $570,536, worsened by a roughly $370,000 snow and ice deficit that included about $275,000 in road salt.
Members also tabled reorganizing committee leadership until Irena Massei returns and floated a $40,000 fuel reserve fund and a meals and rooms tax article ahead of the May 19 town meeting.
