BARRE — The Barre Finance Committee adopted the town's first written finance policy and approved a fiscal 2028 budget calendar at its October 27 meeting. Chair Zachary Macutkiewicz was reelected unanimously, and Don Markowski was elected the committee's clerk. The committee set a public budget hearing for May 11, 2027, about a week before annual town meeting.
Town finance staff told the panel the DPW's machinery account is running low because of aging dump trucks, warning "that department needs vehicles" and that "there's no avoiding" an increase next year. Members also learned the town found $400,000 in previously uncertified funds while reconciling years of disorganized books, and that fiscal 2027 required pulling $88,000 from a health insurance account to cover deficits elsewhere.
