Finance Committee · Meeting of May 13, 2026

BARRE — The Barre Finance Committee recommended a borrowing-funded $450,000 dump truck and a divided plan to abolish the town's elected water and sewer commissions ahead of annual town meeting. The panel also backed a $6,065,445 omnibus budget, a 0.75 percent local meals tax, and a 6 percent room occupancy tax, while tabling the Quabbin Regional school assessment pending updated numbers. Member Eric Reicker cast the lone dissent on the dump truck, which officials said would add about $208.18 a year to the average tax bill.

On the DPW governance change, prompted by a state inspector general directive, member Cory Bombredi asked, "what's broken that we need to abolish it and change?" Officials said the current snow and ice deficit of $371,973.15 would be partly covered by a hoped-for $258,000 in pending state winter-recovery aid, with a special town meeting possible this fall if that funding falls through.
