Select Board · Meeting of August 11, 2026

Barre Select Board says town has spent nearly $85,000 trucking in water after a critical well failed. Chief Water Operator Dave Craven and DPW Superintendent Tim Batchelor told the board Well 2, offline since last week, needs at least 10 days of cleaning before it can return to service, with tanker trucks delivering 50,000 to 92,000 gallons a day in the meantime at roughly $900 an hour. State Sen.

Durant said his office connected Barre with USDA official Chris Lyon on an emergency grant that could provide "up to a million dollars," though the federal fiscal year closing September 30 could delay the money. Officials outlined two long-term fixes: a $4.2 million treatment plant for an idled, iron-heavy well, or a $4.6 million new well. Staff insisted "we're not Flint, Michigan," saying the water remains safe aside from DEP-required chlorine.
