BARRE — September 7, 2017 — Quabbin Regional School Committee hears consultant pitches to replace superintendent of 31 years. The full regional committee met September 7 to receive presentations from the New England School Development Council and the Massachusetts Association of School Committees as it prepares to find a successor to Superintendent Maureen Marshall, who has led the district since 1986. NESDEC's executive director said a national superintendent search typically takes four months and runs "a little under $20,000" including advertising, while MASC representative Tracy Novick outlined a self-directed option available to the committee at lower cost. Both consultants cautioned that Massachusetts' open-meeting rules expose finalists to public scrutiny, which can deter strong sitting superintendents from applying. No vote was taken; the committee planned to continue deliberations at its next full meeting.
