BARRE — September 17, 2018 — Barre Select Board appoints three residents to study whether town should take over its transfer station. The board voted unanimously Monday to seat Cathy, John Chase, and Michael Blanchard on a new Transportation Study Committee, directing them to assess financial viability before a December 31 deadline to notify current operator Solid Waste Solutions on contract renewal. Chair Dr. Maureen Marshall said the town operates at roughly 20 percent of its DEP-permitted capacity and argued the facility could generate net revenue if the town took direct control, potentially lowering bag and sticker prices. The board also voted to open a special town meeting warrant, closing October 4 at 3 p.m., with the meeting set for December, and spent extended time discussing a dispute with Seven Hills Foundation over security and communication protocols at Stetson School, with Clerk Richard Stevens calling the organization's attorney letter "furthest from the truth" in its characterization of the board's concerns.
