Barre Finance Committee Hears Budget Presentations, Takes No Formal Votes
BARRE — February 7, 2019 — Barre Finance Committee reviews department budgets and regional cost-sharing agreements without taking votes. The committee heard presentations covering the assistant collector salary — flagged as significantly below scale — a proposed $15,000 tax title line item to replace free-cash transfers, and a shared regional building inspection arrangement that routes neighboring-town revenue into Barre's general fund. A regional economic development director position, originally funded through a roughly $90,000 grant split among five towns including Barre, Hardwick, and New Braintree, was described as potentially sustainable as a combined planner-and-economic-development role at roughly one-fifth cost to each town. A senior center usage-tracking proposal would shift a flat $7,500 neighboring-town fee to a usage-based formula projected to yield approximately $25,000 annually, based on data showing 28 percent of senior center visits come from that neighboring community.
